Looking back to Dove Holes from a bend in the river, We follow the path through Upper Taylor's Wood, Ilam Rock, where we'd emerged huffing and puffing on our recent Dovedale walk. The walk consists of woodland, open fields and the scenic River Dove. The path was also flooded in some areas but still passable. There are free public toilets in Milldale. Good walk. The delightful valley is one of the most popular places in the national park with its distinctive limestone scenery, fascinating caves and diverse plant life.You continue north past Bunster Hill, the Dove Hole Caves and the striking Ilam Rock before coming to Milldale. To the left of the drive, youll see a small fingerpost marking the way across a field around the back of the hotel. You'll enjoy wonderful views all along this route, but please be careful on the hills and make sure you go prepared with the appropriate clothing and refreshments. Lovers Leap or Ilam Rock 5. Walking boots required! When we walked through the fields the route tried to take us left in the village but we decided to go right and the views were stunning. This is a much quieter route. There's a pretty village green, old limestone cottages and a pub dating back to the 1600s. This option is for those of you that don't have too much time but still want to enjoy the wonderful scenery that this site offers. Shame that is is rammed with tourists when the weather is good. The path will go downhill to join the surfaced track by Dovedale car park and the public toilets (20p charge, not National Trust). If the river is low enough you can cross Dovedales picturesque stepping stones and climb the limestone reef knoll of Thorpe Cloud, a perfect small hill for families to explore with great views from its pointy 287m summit.
